PHOTOGRAPHY SHORT BREAK - MID-WEEK DIGITAL PHOTO WORKSHOP with Graham Robinson
6th - 8th May 2008

Who is this workshop for?
This short break is for beginners and improvers using Digital SLR cameras.

If you use a compact camera, you are also very welcome to join, but some of the Day 2 material will be adapted to suit the constraints of the camera.

The workshop is for just 4 people and so you will get lots of individual attention and tuition.

By the end of the workshop:
§You will understand how to hold and fire a camera to improve the technical quality of your
pictures.
§You will understand a range of basic photographic compositional principles
and be able to apply them when making a photograph.
§You will understand the range of camera controls. You will be able to use
these to improve the composition of your pictures and to control or express
subject and camera movement.
§You will understand the picture creation process and be able to employ this
to successfully create planned photographs.
§You will have handouts and reference material to refer to at home so that
you can continue to learn and improve your results after the course.

Pre-workshop preparation
Take 5 to 10 pictures to bring to workshop (6x4 enprints are fine).
Find 5 to 10 pictures from books, magazines etc. that you like.

PROGRAMME
Monday 5^th May
Arrive at Edmund House Guest House

Tuesday 6^th May
09:30 _ 12:00 Theory: Learning to See.
Review a range of images including participant’s pictures and samples.
Elements of Composition: Centre of interest, Subject placement, Simplicity, Viewpoint and camera angle, Balance, Shapes and lines, Pattern, Lighting, Texture, Tone, Contrast, Framing, Foreground, Background, Perspective, etc.

13:30 _ 16:00 Practical Walkshop.
Basic Operation (Holding camera, viewfinder, framing/zooming, focussing)
Looking for and making pictures by applying compositional theory from the morning.

Wednesday 7^th May
09:30 _ 12:00 Theory: Camera Controls and Creativity:
ISO Setting, Focal length, Focusing, Metering, Exposure, Aperture, Shutter speed & Movement.

14:30 _ 18:00 Practical Walkshop
Using Focal length [, aperture]* and focussing to emphasise compositions.
Capturing and controlling movement [by controlling shutter speed]*.

* for users of compact camera equivalent subject modes will be used where they are available.

Thursday 8^th May
Independent photography.
Apply Theory and Practical ideas from previous two days.
Take pictures during the day and select some pictures for the evening critique.

19:00 _ 21:00 Review and critique of independent photography.
Review key compositional ideas and creative aims of pictures and to assess successes and improvement points.

Post-Workshop
On-going email support and access to course materials on-line.
